We feel the best way to demonstrate how we work and the positive effect drama can have on children is to hear from those who are already taking part in our programme. Here are some words from a few of the parents of our pupils...
"All three of our boys attend Amy's group's in Harpenden and absolutely love it, she has engendered in them all a real love for drama and the sheer freedom and fun of it. It was just mind-blowing to see the confidence and enjoyment that they all stood up on stage with yesterday in their end of year shows.
The time spent playing drama games and producing improvised sketches has given the children the chance to experiment and have fun, both things that are so important. Drama has helped our boys feel comfortable in their own skin."
"We have two daughters who attend Helen O'Grady classes, one entering her fourth year and one entering her sixth year. They have absolutely loved attending the classes from the very first session to this very day. We were looking for something fairly small for confidence building and this has been such a positive experience for them. They love acting out any parts given to them on a weekly basis, the drama games they play and simply having so much fun giving a fantastic boost to their self esteem.
The teachers at Helen O'Grady are wonderful and under their super guidance give all the children the chance to creatively express themselves. Our daughters have had the experience of working with various teachers and have enjoyed classes from beginning to end. The end of year performances are wonderful and thoroughly enjoyable.
Thank you to everyone who works so hard. We wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone with children."
"When I dropped my daughter at her first session with Helen O'Grady Drama Academy she was excited and looking forward to her first drama experience. Now, six years later she still attends classes every week with that same enthusiasm.
The sessions encourage participation, engagement with other students and above all, fun! Helen O'Grady has given my daughter the confidence and communication skills she has needed during her most valuable school years."
Mrs Gale - A proud mum!
"Our four children now attend Helen O'Grady drama classes in our village. We decided to put our eldest son into drama classes years ago as he was shy, quiet and reserved and we wanted to boost his confidence. In the safe environment of the drama class, he slowly came out of his shell and now, 3 years later, he speaks confidently on stage, he is capable of memorising lines and movement, he's made some great friends and he just has such a great time in his drama class.
We put our daughter in for a different reason. She has always been confident, bold and courageous and we wanted her to be able to use dramatic skills in her dancing. She loves the drama classes so much and they've helped her in so many ways. Our two youngest boys feel safe in the drama classes and love being able to express themselves this way."
"The Helen O’Grady drama academy based at Biggleswade has proved to be an extremely positive part of my young daughter’s lives. It is run professionally and enthusiastically by all and my children have been fortunate enough to have Lucinda as their instructor in recent years.
My twelve year old has been so inspired by the group that she currently maintains a desire to become an actress. I firmly believe that whilst not every child attending the drama will pursue the performing arts professionally, all who attend will grow in confidence and be inspired. Thankyou to all of the leaders especially Lucinda."
Katie absolutely loved her drama class last night, thank you. I was particularly impressed at how careful the teachers were to make sure she was included right from the start and also that the lesson revolved around the children tapping into their own imaginations.
Drama classes can so often be based exclusively around acting out a set script, which is fine but they have so many amazing and unexpected ideas it seems a shame not to develop that talent as well. Katie’s already looking forward to the class next week so we’ll see you then.
I just thought I would pass on Keegan's latest comments - when dad fetched him yesterday he exclaimed that drama was "the best thing that has ever happened in my whole life".
He is thoroughly enjoying the group and it is such a delight for us to see him so happy and enthusiastic so please pass on our thanks to Beau.
We are really very pleased that we found Helen O’Grady. The sessions have made a noticeable difference to our son’s confidence especially in his dealings with his peers and for that we are extremely grateful.
In terms of what he’s got out of it, initially it was barely perceptible changes but over time we now see differences that are really pleasing – it’s as though he now owns the space he’s in – like he now feels entitled to be there instead of before when he seemed to allow himself to move backwards in a queue or just get squeezed out.
Teachers report that he’s been actively speaking out more in class, in a good way; volunteered for public speaking competitions and for a big part in the school play that involves him opening the first scene with a song! Formally unheard of. For us Helen O’Grady has certainly delivered what we hoped they might so we say a big thank you to Lucinda.
